Philoptochos News Philoptochos Established
in 1931 by the late Ecumenical Patriarch, Athenagoras I, and greatly
expanded in Canada in 1974 by His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop
Sotirios, Philoptochos Societies are an important part of the Greek
Orthodox parishes everywhere. Our Mission To preserve the
sacredness of the Orthodox family and promote the Orthodox faith and
traditions. We voluntarily aid those who need our help through special
funds or solicitations. We promote participation in the
activities of the Greek Orthodox community and promote the charitable,
benevolent and philanthropic purposes of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis
of Toronto. Volunteering “Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8) The
word Philoptochos means “friend of the poor”. Who are the poor? Those
who are poor in financial and material resources, yes; but also those
who are poor in spirit, poor in health, poor in companionship, poor in
emotional stability and poor in whatever is needed to lead a fulfilling
life. Every woman in our parish churches is automatically
entitled to become a member of Philoptochos and give her time and
effort in order to promote the many outstanding ministries within the
Greek Orthodox Church. Why become an active member? The
benevolent works of Philoptochos are a continuation of Christ’s
ministry on earth. Each member has an opportunity, through her
participation in the ministries and programs of Philoptochos, to return
to God a portion of the time, talents and resources with which He has
gifted her. Most importantly, a member reaps the rewards that
fellowship and sisterhood can offer to enrich her life. All
women of our Greek community are encouraged to become members of
Philoptochos. You can be an active member or a supporting
member. It is important that we reach out and involve others in
the life of our church to help strengthen the unity within our
community. Your help is especially needed in preparation of the
Teas that are held twice a year. Volunteers are needed to obtain
donations, serve, make sandwiches, set-up tables and clean-up. It
is with the help of volunteers that contributes to the success of the
Teas. |
